Senators Urge Biden Administration for Briefing on Austin Tice Release Efforts

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

In a bipartisan effort, 34 senators have urged President Biden to provide a briefing by December 20th on the administration's efforts to secure the release of American journalist Austin Tice from Syria. A letter spearheaded by Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) emphasizes the changing dynamics in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime, presenting a crucial opportunity to bring Tice home.

Tice, a freelance journalist, disappeared in Syria in 2012. While both President Biden and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan have stated that Tice's return is a top priority, the senators are seeking a detailed briefing on the specific actions being taken. The FBI and the State Department are offering rewards of up to $1 million and $10 million, respectively, for information leading to his location.

Renewed efforts are underway to connect U.S. officials with individuals in Syria who might possess information on Tice's whereabouts. Back-channel communications are being facilitated through partners in Turkey, and hostage-affairs envoy Roger Carstens is engaging in similar outreach in Beirut. The recent release of prisoners by rebel groups in Syria has further fueled hopes for Tice's return, although his condition remains unknown.

The senators' letter underscores the urgency of the situation, highlighting Tice's background as a veteran, journalist, and Eagle Scout. They urge the administration to employ all available resources to secure his release and emphasize Congress's willingness to collaborate on this effort. The letter also calls for measures to deter future hostage-taking of American citizens.
