Wildfires Threaten Homes Near Athens, Prompting Evacuations

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Amidst strong winds and tinder-dry conditions, wildfires are raging near Athens, Greece, forcing the evacuation of several coastal communities. Fueled by powerful gusts reaching up to 45 mph, the flames are spreading rapidly through parched vegetation and pine forests, particularly impacting areas with numerous vacation homes. Firefighting efforts are concentrated near Lagonisi, located approximately 25 miles southeast of the capital, utilizing water-dropping aircraft to combat the blaze. A second significant wildfire has erupted near the resort town of Loutraki, about 55 miles west of Athens, necessitating the evacuation of a children's summer camp and a senior rehabilitation center. Authorities have issued emergency alerts to residents and visitors in the affected areas, while local officials are working to assist with evacuations, hampered by disruptions in cell phone service. The fires have reached the outskirts of residential areas in both Loutraki and Lagonisi, causing damage to some properties, although the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed. This emergency comes on the heels of a recent heatwave and with further high temperatures anticipated later this week, increasing the risk of further wildfires. The Greater Athens area and much of southern Greece remain on high alert.
