Due to predicted frigid temperatures in Washington, D.C., President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony will be held indoors. Trump announced the change of venue to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Truth Social, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of attendees, including law enforcement, first responders, and supporters, in the face of potentially record-breaking low temperatures and wind chill. He urged anyone planning to attend to dress warmly.
Rehearsals for the inauguration were already underway despite the impending weather. FOX Weather forecasts temperatures in the upper 20s with a wind chill making it feel like single digits, and possible snow following a Sunday storm. Despite the change in venue for the swearing-in ceremony, the three Inaugural Balls are still scheduled to proceed as planned.
Trump stated that the Capital One Arena will be open for public viewing of the inauguration and the Presidential Parade, and that he plans to join the crowd there after the swearing-in ceremony. The Inaugural Committee confirmed the move to the Rotunda, noting that this is not unprecedented. President Ronald Reagan's second inauguration in 1985 was also held indoors due to extreme cold. Historically, inaugurations were typically held inside the Capitol, but the tradition of outdoor ceremonies began with President James Monroe after the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol building.
