Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The University of Connecticut has introduced its newest furry ambassador, Jonathan XV, a two-month-old Siberian husky puppy who will officially assume mascot duties this fall. Born in Ontario, Canada on April 19th, Jonathan XV joined the UConn community on June 17th and was recently presented to the school's board of trustees.

Currently, the 12-pound pup resides with the same host family as the current mascot, Jonathan XIV, and is undergoing training for his future role. This includes appearances at sporting events and other campus activities, as well as engaging in social media promotion.

Described as a quick learner and undeniably charming, Jonathan XV is already emulating his older counterpart, mirroring actions like sitting. For the time being, both Jonathans will make public appearances together, with Jonathan XV fully taking the reins when Jonathan XIV retires in October.

Nine-year-old Jonathan XIV, who hails from Arkansas, has served as the UConn mascot since 2014. He overcame a health scare earlier this year, involving the removal of his spleen due to a benign growth, and even journeyed to Texas to celebrate the men's basketball team's NCAA championship victory. The Jonathan lineage honors Jonathan Trumbull, Connecticut's last colonial and first state governor. The mascots are cared for by Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity. The Husky became UConn's official mascot in 1933 following a student poll.
