Two American destroyers successfully defended against a multifaceted attack launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden over the weekend, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The USS Stockdale and USS O’Kane neutralized multiple threats, including anti-ship ballistic missiles, uncrewed aerial systems, and a cruise missile, while escorting three U.S.-flagged merchant vessels. Remarkably, the attacks resulted in no casualties or damage to any involved ships.

CENTCOM emphasized that these aggressive actions underscore the persistent threat posed by the Iranian-backed Houthis to international shipping and regional stability. This incident follows retaliatory strikes conducted by U.S. forces in mid-November against Houthi weapons storage facilities in Yemen. Those strikes targeted advanced weaponry used by the Houthis to attack both military and civilian vessels navigating the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

During the November strikes, U.S. forces utilized a range of air and naval assets, including the F-35C stealth fighter jet in its combat debut, according to a defense official. The objective of the strikes was not only to respond to Houthi aggression but also to diminish their capacity to threaten U.S. partners in the region.
