Musk Leads Federal Workforce Efficiency Drive Under Trump's Direction

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced a new Trump administration initiative requiring federal employees to report their weekly productivity. In a post on X, Musk stated that employees will receive an email prompting them to detail their accomplishments from the previous week. Non-responsiveness will be interpreted as a resignation.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed the plan, stating it reflects the administration's commitment to a more efficient and accountable federal workforce. Employees are required to submit a brief summary of their weekly activities to their managers. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung expressed support for the initiative on X.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) criticized the move, calling it disrespectful and vowing to challenge any unlawful terminations resulting from the new policy. The union criticized Musk's lack of public service experience.

This new initiative comes as Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues to identify and eliminate wasteful spending within the federal government. DOGE recently revealed the existence of approximately 4 million active government credit cards, which processed around 90 million transactions totaling $40 billion in fiscal year 2024.

Former President Donald Trump praised Musk's efforts on Truth Social but encouraged him to be more assertive in his cost-cutting measures. Musk responded affirmatively to Trump's call for increased action.
