Texas Governor Deploys State Resources to Support Federal Immigration Enforcement

Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to collaborate with federal authorities in identifying and apprehending undocumented immigrants with outstanding warrants across the state. This initiative aligns with the Trump administration's focus on enforcing immigration laws.

Governor Abbott emphasized the partnership with the federal government, stating that Texas now has a partner in President Trump to address the border situation and enhance national security. DPS tactical strike teams will work with the Homeland Security Task Force, combining resources to target approximately 5,400 individuals with active warrants.

This directive follows Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis's announcement that her department would not participate in civil immigration enforcement activities. While Austin PD declined to comment on this matter, Austin City Council member Vanessa Fuentes expressed support for the Chief's decision, citing concerns from the community regarding ICE operations. Fuentes highlighted the importance of local police focusing on crime-solving rather than immigration enforcement.

Fuentes's position drew criticism from Libs of TikTok, who questioned her stance on local police not assisting with federal immigration laws. Fuentes defended her position. Despite the local stance, ICE operations continued in Austin over the weekend, reportedly targeting individuals wanted for violent offenses. While Austin police were not directly involved, Chief Davis confirmed that the targeted individuals were also persons of interest for the Austin Police Department.
