Trump Administration Makes Diplomatic Push to End Ukraine War

Created: JANUARY 14, 2025

Former President Trump is spearheading a diplomatic effort to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, dispatching key members of his administration to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and explore avenues for peace. Vice President JD Vance will meet with Zelenskyy during the Munich Security Conference, a meeting confirmed by a Vance spokesperson to Fox News Digital. This comes shortly before U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg's scheduled trip to Ukraine.

Trump also announced that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will travel to Ukraine to discuss matters related to sanctions, rare earth minerals, and the allocation of U.S. funding. Trump expressed his desire for a swift resolution to the conflict on Truth Social, highlighting the immense human cost and financial burden of the war.

Kellogg has been entrusted with the task of mediating a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He recently met with Ukrainian delegations at the State Department to advance this objective.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are also attending the Munich Security Conference, where the Ukraine war is expected to be a central topic of discussion.

While a definitive peace plan is yet to be formalized, a European official informed Fox News Digital that the U.S. is actively considering various options and consulting with allies. The official emphasized that the upcoming conference in Munich is too early to unveil a concrete peace plan, given the complexity of the negotiations involved.

Trump himself indicated the possibility of meeting with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future.

In a recent interview, Trump underscored the importance of securing access to Ukraine's rare earth minerals in exchange for U.S. military assistance. He also made remarks about the uncertain future of Ukraine's sovereignty, suggesting the possibility of it becoming part of Russia someday.

Both Zelenskyy and Putin have expressed resistance to direct negotiations, with Putin demanding territorial concessions from Ukraine. While Zelenskyy has rejected any territorial concessions, he acknowledged the potential role of diplomacy in reclaiming lost territories.

Vance, who previously held strong reservations about providing aid to Ukraine, has been tasked with representing the administration in these crucial discussions.

A recent Munich Security report highlighted concerns about the U.S.'s role in global leadership under the Trump administration, characterizing it as a potential risk. The report cautioned against the implications of the U.S. potentially withdrawing from its traditional role as a security guarantor for Europe, particularly in the context of the Ukraine conflict.
