Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce recently reminisced about his first cheesesteak experience, citing Tony Luke's as his inaugural taste due to its proximity to the Eagles' stadium. While that specific location is now closed, Tony Luke's continues to serve fans from its Lincoln Financial Field stand, a tradition since 2003.
Lauded by Philadelphia Magazine for its top-tier cheesesteaks, Tony Luke's, originally focused on Italian specialties, quickly adapted its menu after opening in 1992. Tony Lucidonio Jr., known as Tony Luke Jr., credits unconventional commercials for boosting the restaurant's popularity. The original location Kelce frequented has since been renamed following a family dispute, but Luke Jr. now oversees franchises at Philadelphia International Airport, Las Vegas, and even Bahrain.
A lifelong Eagles fan, Luke Jr. even appeared in the 2006 film "Invincible." Interestingly, he considers roast pork, not the cheesesteak, to be Philadelphia's quintessential sandwich. While the cheesesteak has gained national recognition, Luke Jr. maintains that a true Philly cheesesteak consists only of meat, bread, cheese, and optionally onions – no peppers. He emphasizes rib-eye as the ideal meat due to its flavor and fat content, acknowledging the cheesesteak's indulgent nature.
Tony Luke's distinguishes itself by its unique cheese-melting method. Instead of placing cheese on top of the cooked steak, they flip it, melting the cheese on the grill's bottom. This prevents the steak from overcooking while ensuring the cheese melts throughout.
