Texas Train Derailment Claims Lives of Two Union Pacific Employees

A collision between a Union Pacific train and a tractor-trailer in Pecos, Texas, on Wednesday evening resulted in a tragic derailment, claiming the lives of two railroad employees and injuring three others. The incident occurred when the train struck a tractor-trailer obstructing the railroad tracks, subsequently derailing and impacting the local Chamber of Commerce building.

The deceased employees were identified as Clay Burt and Phillip Araujo, both members of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation workers (SMART-TD). The union expressed its condolences and emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures within the railway industry. "This heartbreaking incident underscores the dangers faced by railroad workers every day and highlights the urgent need for improved safety protocols throughout the sector," the union stated.

While three of the derailed cars contained potentially hazardous materials, including lithium-ion batteries and airbags, authorities confirmed that these materials remained contained. Leaked diesel fuel was also successfully contained, preventing further environmental damage. The three injured individuals received treatment at Reeves Regional Health for minor injuries. It remains unclear whether the injured individuals were also Union Pacific employees.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) released a statement acknowledging the incident and pledged to work with relevant authorities to investigate the cause and implement preventative measures. "My team and I are closely monitoring the situation in Pecos. We are collaborating with the NTSB and local law enforcement to determine the cause of this tragic accident and explore strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future," Cruz stated on X.

The SMART-TD union confirmed its cooperation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the ongoing investigation. "Railroad workers perform essential duties, often under hazardous conditions. As we grieve this loss, we reaffirm our dedication to advocating for stronger safety regulations to protect all those who work on and reside near railways," the union stated.
