A Tennessee teenager who lost both her legs in a February car accident in St. Louis has filed a lawsuit against the city, the driver allegedly responsible for the crash, and the driver of the second vehicle involved. Janae Edmondson, a high school senior at the time, was visiting St. Louis for a volleyball tournament when the tragic incident occurred.
The lawsuit, filed on Edmondson's behalf, alleges that Daniel Riley, who was out on bond for a robbery charge despite multiple bond violations, caused the crash. Edmondson was crossing an intersection with her parents when Riley's speeding vehicle collided with another car, pinning her between the two. The accident sparked public outcry and raised concerns about the handling of Riley's case by then-Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, who resigned in May amidst calls for her removal.

The lawsuit describes the incident as a "completely preventable" tragedy that "brutally ripped away" Edmondson's future. It seeks damages exceeding $25,000 from Riley, his mother (who allegedly allowed him to use her car despite his "habitual recklessness"), the city of St. Louis, and the second driver, who was also reportedly driving without a valid license.
The suit criticizes the city for allegedly failing to maintain a safe intersection, specifically citing an inadequate yield sign obscured by buildings. Furthermore, it asserts that both drivers involved bear responsibility for their actions. While the lawsuit doesn't directly name Kim Gardner, her attorney has acknowledged they are considering their options.
Riley is currently incarcerated awaiting trial for his criminal charges. A city spokesman declined to comment on the pending litigation.
