San Francisco's New Mayor Vows to Tackle Homelessness, Crime, and Fentanyl Crisis

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

San Francisco's Mayor-elect, Daniel Lurie, has pledged to address the city's pressing issues of homelessness, crime, and drug overdoses. During a recent walkabout, a resident urged Lurie to "clean up the streets and the homeless," to which he responded, "We're going to." This commitment echoes his campaign promise to end the perception of lawlessness in the city. Lurie, a first-time political candidate, Levi Strauss heir, and founder of an anti-poverty non-profit, defeated incumbent Mayor London Breed in November. He expressed his belief in San Francisco's potential for resurgence, stating, "If I had to place my bet on a city that is going to come back stronger and better than ever, it is our city."

The Wall Street Journal reported that Lurie's motivation for running for mayor stemmed from his difficulty explaining the city's decline to his children. He declared, "I just couldn’t stand by… This is our city. I love it with all my being." Lurie's plans include declaring a state of emergency to combat the fentanyl crisis, bolstering the police force, and mandating a full-time return to in-person work for City Hall employees. He has appointed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as the chair of his transition team and created a new position, chief of housing and economic development, for former Twitter CFO Ned Segal.

Following his decisive victory, Lurie emphasized his commitment to common-sense policies in an interview with CNN. He stated, "I am a lifelong Democrat, but we don‘t think of ourselves as progressives or moderates or conservatives here in San Francisco. We just want to get back to common sense." He outlined his priorities as ensuring a fully staffed police department, addressing the behavioral health and drug crisis, and fostering a thriving business environment. He believes these are not partisan issues but rather common-sense approaches to revitalizing the city.
