Release of JFK Files: Trump Administration Sets Declassification Plan Deadline

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and Attorney General are under a deadline to unveil their strategy for declassifying the remaining John F. Kennedy assassination files. They must submit their proposed plan by the end of Friday.

This action stems from an executive order signed last month by President Trump, mandating the release of documents related to the assassinations of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. At the time, President Trump stated, "Everything will be revealed."

This move fulfills a campaign promise by President Trump to declassify these documents during his second term, emphasizing the public's right to know the truth after 60 years. While he had initially aimed for a release during his first term, various factors, including appeals from intelligence agencies, delayed the process.

In a previous memo, President Trump justified postponing the release by citing potential harm to national security, law enforcement, and foreign affairs that outweighed the public interest in immediate disclosure.

Pam Bondi, Attorney General

Attorney General Pam Bondi, recently sworn in, is currently in New Orleans overseeing security for Super Bowl LIX. This visit underscores the administration's focus on combating violent crime and terrorism. She has yet to publicly comment on the JFK file declassification order or her specific approach to its implementation. Reports indicate that Bondi will also be issuing directives regarding the weaponization of the legal system and mandatory death penalty considerations for prosecutors.

Tulsi Gabbard

Meanwhile, Tulsi Gabbard, nominated by President Trump to lead the DNI, recently cleared the Senate Intelligence Committee with unanimous Republican support. Her confirmation hearings have included scrutiny of her past interactions with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, her position on FISA Section 702 surveillance, and her previous support for Edward Snowden.
