Looking to revitalize their struggling offense, the Cincinnati Reds called up one of their top prospects, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, on Monday, July 17, 2023. The 23-year-old infielder made his Major League debut against the San Francisco Giants, starting as the designated hitter and batting seventh. His name, at 27 characters (including the hyphen), is the longest in MLB history, surpassing Minnesota Twins pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson by five characters.
Encarnacion-Strand joined a starting lineup featuring three other rookies: third baseman Elly De La Cruz, shortstop Matt McLain, and pitcher Brandon Williamson. This influx of young talent underscores the Reds' commitment to building for the future.
"Being able to play with this incredibly talented group is a huge honor," Encarnacion-Strand remarked. "The team has been incredibly welcoming since spring training. I feel comfortable and confident playing alongside them."
The California native boasts impressive stats from his time at Triple-A Louisville. In 67 games, he hit .331 with 21 doubles, 20 home runs, and 62 RBIs, culminating in a 1.042 OPS. He also led the International League with 177 total bases.
General Manager Nick Krall explained the decision to promote Encarnacion-Strand, citing the player's consistent performance and adjustments made over the past few months. With Kevin Newman placed on the 10-day injured list with gastritis, the timing was ideal for Encarnacion-Strand to join the big league club. Krall highlighted the young hitter's improved plate discipline and continued power as key factors in the decision.
The Reds were looking to snap a four-game losing streak, having been swept by the Milwaukee Brewers and enduring three consecutive shutouts before a narrow 4-3 loss on Sunday. Originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round of the 2021 draft, Encarnacion-Strand was acquired by the Reds in August 2022 as part of a trade that sent pitcher Tyler Mahle to Minnesota.
