Mysterious White Powder Mailed to Republican Lawmakers in Multiple States

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Several Republican lawmakers across multiple states have reported receiving letters containing a suspicious white powder, prompting investigations by federal and state authorities. Montana, Kansas, and Tennessee have all been affected by these mailings, causing concern and temporary office closures.

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte confirmed reports of these "disturbing" threats, and Attorney General Austin Knudsen urged caution when handling mail and advised contacting law enforcement immediately about any suspicious packages. Knudsen's own mother, a state representative, was among those targeted.

In Kansas, the FBI is investigating over 70 similar letters sent to lawmakers and public officials. Initial lab tests have not identified any immediate public safety risks. Similarly, in Tennessee, a legislative office was briefly locked down after Republican leaders received letters with the white powder and accompanying threats. A House spokesperson indicated the threats appeared to originate from a "liberal activist."

While preliminary tests in both Kansas and Tennessee have not detected any common toxins, investigations continue. Authorities in all affected states are working to determine the source of the mailings and the nature of the white powder.
