Philadelphia Mass Shooting Update: Suspect Held Without Bail, DA Krasner Criticizes Gun Laws

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Kimbrady Carriker, the suspect in the Philadelphia mass shooting that claimed five lives, is being held without bail on charges of murder and attempted murder. District Attorney Larry Krasner revealed that Carriker, 40, was equipped with an AR-15-style rifle, a handgun, a police scanner, and body armor, suggesting he was prepared for a sustained firefight. Despite this, Krasner described the attack as a "random, premeditated, deliberate killing carried out with an assault rifle."

The victims have been identified as 15-year-old Daujan Brown, 31-year-old Joseph Wamah, Jr., 20-year-old Lashyd Merritt, 29-year-old Dymir Stanton, and 59-year-old Ralph Moralis. Several children were also wounded in the shooting, including a two-year-old who suffered four gunshot wounds to the legs.

Krasner has strongly condemned the current state of gun legislation, calling the situation "disgusting" and pointing to neighboring states like New Jersey and Delaware as examples of places with more effective gun control measures. He criticized the lack of similar regulations in Pennsylvania and highlighted the frequent occurrence of gunshot victims in Philadelphia hospitals.

The District Attorney also addressed the practice of some Republican politicians wearing AR-15 lapel pins, viewing it as a symbolic endorsement of the Second Amendment. He specifically mentioned Representative George Santos (R-NY) and Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) as examples of politicians who have worn these pins.
