The Baltimore Orioles dominated the New York Yankees in a lopsided 14-1 victory on Thursday, racking up 12 runs in the initial four innings. However, the resounding win wasn't without its drama. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was ejected in the eighth inning following a heated exchange with plate umpire Dan Iassogna.
The ejection stemmed from an incident where Yankees pitcher Wandy Peralta hit Orioles center fielder Colton Cowser with a pitch, loading the bases. Iassogna issued warnings to both teams, a decision that puzzled Hyde, leading to his ejection. Hyde expressed his confusion post-game, stating, "A weird situation – that’s my weirdest ejection of all-time. First one up two touchdowns." He clarified his intention was merely to inquire why Peralta wasn't ejected after the warning, a question he felt shouldn't have warranted his dismissal.
This marked Hyde's 12th career ejection and his third this season. The Orioles' offensive explosion in the third and fourth innings, featuring 12 runs on 11 hits, highlighted by Gunnar Henderson's two home runs and five RBIs, overshadowed the ejection. Hyde praised Henderson's performance, emphasizing his power and ability to hit to all fields. Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino struggled, giving up seven runs on 10 hits in just 2.2 innings, raising his ERA to 7.38 for the season. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the rough outing but expressed the need to support Severino's improvement.
