Olbermann Fact-Checked After Dismissing Mace's Claim About Clinton Destroying Devices

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann found himself corrected by Twitter's Community Notes feature after mocking Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) for asserting that Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign destroyed government devices. Mace's initial tweet on Sunday referenced Clinton's use of a hammer to destroy devices containing evidence related to a private email server and classified information, arguing that a similar standard should apply to Donald Trump.

Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann was publicly fact-checked after he mocked a Republican congresswoman for claiming that failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton destroyed government devices.

Olbermann questioned Mace's sanity, implying she was hallucinating. However, Community Notes quickly cited articles from CNN, Business Insider, and Snopes confirming the destruction of Clinton's devices. These reports detailed how a Clinton aide admitted to the FBI that he had destroyed phones by breaking them or using a hammer.

Mace responded by highlighting the factual basis of her claim, referencing the use of BleachBit to wipe Clinton's server and sharing a CNN link. Olbermann retorted by suggesting Mace's familiarity with recreational drugs due to her mention of "stale weed." Mace denied drug use and expressed surprise at Olbermann's apparent expertise in the area. This exchange occurred amidst Clinton facing criticism for seemingly mocking Trump's indictment while having faced similar scrutiny for her handling of classified information on a private email server, despite claiming in 2022 that no classified emails were found on the server, contradicting a 2018 government report.

Clinton's actions were labeled as "gloating" by some on Twitter, pointing to the perceived hypocrisy of mocking Trump while having faced similar accusations. The FBI investigated Clinton in 2015 for storing classified information on her private email server.
