New Environmental Rules Douse Several Los Angeles Fourth of July Fireworks Displays

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Updated environmental regulations concerning explosives used over water have led to the cancellation of multiple Independence Day fireworks shows in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board recently introduced a new permit system for fireworks displays, aiming to minimize plastic pollution, pyrotechnic debris, and other contaminants entering oceans and marinas.

While the majority of planned fireworks displays have reportedly signaled their intention to comply with these new rules, a handful, including two in Redondo Beach utilizing Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, have declined to adapt. Jim Souza, the company's CEO, expressed concerns about safety and the rapid implementation of the regulations, citing limited input from experienced fireworks producers.

These new rules follow a federal lawsuit filed earlier this year against the Big Bang on the Bay fireworks show in Long Beach. Although the lawsuit, brought by the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation, didn't succeed in court, it highlighted instances of fireworks-related pollution, prompting the Los Angeles Water Board to take action.

The impact of these cancellations is already being felt, with Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand noting that this could be the first year without fireworks at King Harbor.
