MLB Commissioner Explains Why League-Wide Pride Night Isn't Ideal

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

During June's Pride Month, numerous Major League Baseball teams have hosted individual Pride Nights at their stadiums to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Commissioner Rob Manfred recently addressed the possibility of a league-wide Pride Night, explaining why the current team-by-team approach is preferred.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred speaks to the media prior to a game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants at American Family Field  in Milwaukee on May 25, 2023.

Manfred emphasized player comfort and individual beliefs as key factors in the decision. He stated that the league discourages teams from altering logos on uniforms, hats, or bases for these events. This is to avoid placing players in potentially uncomfortable situations if their personal views differ. He believes that allowing each team to make its own decision is crucial, as individual teams have a deep understanding of their local fan base and can best determine whether a Pride Night is appropriate for their market.

This statement comes amidst controversy surrounding the Los Angeles Dodgers' Pride Night, particularly their re-invitation of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a satirical protest group known for its anti-Catholic demonstrations. This decision has sparked debate within the league, with players like Clayton Kershaw and Blake Treinen of the Dodgers and Trevor Williams of the Washington Nationals voicing their concerns.

While some teams, like the Nationals, have already held their Pride Nights, others, such as the Mets, are still planning theirs. Many players have publicly shown their support for Pride Month on social media, including Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners and Marcus Stroman of the Cubs. Conversely, Toronto Blue Jays reliever Anthony Bass recently faced repercussions for supporting anti-LGBTQ+ boycotts, ultimately leading to his release from the team.

While nearly all professional sports leagues have initiatives celebrating LGBTQ+ inclusion, these efforts are not without their detractors. Some oppose the use of rainbow-colored accessories and other symbolic gestures commonly associated with Pride events.
