Following their unsuccessful pursuit of Juan Soto, the New York Yankees have made a significant move by acquiring All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers. The trade, announced on Friday, sends starting pitcher Nestor Cortes and prospect Caleb Durbin to Milwaukee.

The 30-year-old Williams is a two-time All-Star and a two-time recipient of the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year award. Despite missing a significant portion of the previous season due to a back injury, Williams returned to post a 1.25 ERA with 14 saves in 22 appearances. His career ERA stands at an impressive 1.83 with 68 saves. Known as "The Airbender" for his devastating changeup, Williams averages over 14 strikeouts per nine innings. He is expected to immediately assume the closer role for the Yankees, moving Luke Weaver to a setup position.

In return, the Brewers receive Cortes, who will slot into their starting rotation. Cortes had a solid 2024 season, recording a 3.77 ERA and a 9-10 record over 174.1 innings. His season ended with a flexor strain, limiting his World Series contribution to bullpen appearances. The Yankees' decision to trade Cortes stems from their abundance of starting pitching following the historic signing of Max Fried.

The Brewers also acquire prospect Caleb Durbin, a versatile player capable of playing second base, shortstop, third base, and center field. The 24-year-old boasts a .269 minor league batting average with 110 stolen bases and a low strikeout rate. With this trade completed, the Yankees are reportedly still exploring options to bolster their outfield, with Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger among the names being considered as replacements for Juan Soto.
