Former Los Angeles Times legal columnist Harry Litman publicly announced his resignation this week, citing concerns over the paper's owner's perceived appeasement of then President-elect Donald Trump. This incident follows another controversy involving the paper's owner, Patrick Soon-Shiong, and an opinion piece about Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Soon-Shiong shared an opinion piece titled "Trump’s healthcare disruption could pay off—if he pushes real reform," adding, "He is our best chance of doing so." This sparked immediate backlash, with a community note highlighting the author's claim that the LA Times edited out his criticism of RFK Jr. and used a misleading headline. The author, Eric Reinhart, stated that his original piece strongly opposed RFK Jr.'s nomination, calling him "dangerously ignorant." He accused the paper of removing key lines and choosing a title that contradicted his intended message. Reinhart's original, unedited version was later published by The New Republic. The LA Times responded, stating that all op-eds are edited with author permission, but this incident raises questions about editorial practices and potential influence from ownership. Soon-Shiong's public praise of RFK Jr. further complicates the matter and fuels speculation about the paper's editorial direction.
