California Democratic Representative Ro Khanna has encouraged fellow progressives to maintain their presence on X (formerly Twitter), despite many deactivating their accounts following Donald Trump's presidential win. In a recent interview with Politico's "Power Play" podcast, Khanna emphasized the importance of open dialogue and diverse platforms. He stated his belief that Elon Musk, the platform's owner, supports free speech and the need for multiple platforms, while acknowledging that X shouldn't be the sole avenue for online discussion.
Khanna highlighted his own active participation on the platform, contrasting it with the exodus of some progressives. He argued against disengagement, asserting the need for progressive voices to remain part of the conversation.

This trend of progressives leaving X gained traction after the election. Notable figures like MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace announced deleting her X app, citing self-preservation and difficulty finding relevant content, although her account remains active. Former CNN host Don Lemon also publicly declared his departure from the platform.

Khanna expressed concerns about the influence of moneyed interests and the unequal access to digital spaces. He advocated for online environments that promote open conversation and resemble town halls, fostering more balanced public discourse.
Beyond X, reports indicate a broader trend of liberals disengaging from news consumption after Trump's victory. Khanna's call for continued engagement on X stands in contrast to this pattern of disengagement, urging progressives to participate actively in online discussions rather than retreating from the platform.
