The iconic 1980s rock band Journey takes center stage in a new Reelz documentary, "Journey: A Voice Lost . . . and Found," chronicling their meteoric rise, internal struggles, and the complex departure of their legendary frontman, Steve Perry.
Keyboardist Jonathan Cain recounts the fragility surrounding Perry's second departure in 1998. The physical and emotional toll of years on the road had left its mark on the singer, whose once-powerful voice became a source of vulnerability.

Perry's initial departure in 1987 stemmed from burnout and a desire for privacy. His 1996 reunion with the band yielded the Grammy-nominated hit "When You Love a Woman" and a glimmer of a second act. However, a hip injury requiring surgery and disagreements about touring ultimately led to his permanent exit.

Cain recalls the difficult decision to replace Perry, facing backlash from fans who believed Journey couldn't exist without their iconic vocalist. The band persevered, recruiting Steve Augeri, who dedicated eight years to the group despite the persistent shadow of Perry's legacy.

Following Augeri's departure, guitarist Neal Schon discovered Arnel Pineda, a Filipino singer covering Journey songs on YouTube. Pineda's remarkable talent and dedication led him to become Journey's current vocalist, captivating audiences worldwide.

Today, Journey celebrates 50 years of music, while Steve Perry continues his solo career. The documentary offers a glimpse into the band's evolution, highlighting the resilience and passion that have propelled them through challenges and cemented their place in rock history.
