Jim Caviezel's Journey: From Lightning Strikes to 'Passion' Sequel

While confirming the script development for a sequel to the 2004 biblical epic "The Passion of the Christ," actor Jim Caviezel shared his challenging experiences during the original film's production. Caviezel, currently starring in "Sound of Freedom," revealed he was struck by lightning, endured a cross-related injury, and underwent subsequent heart surgeries.

The lightning incident occurred during the filming of the Sermon on the Mount scene. On the fifth take, Caviezel was struck, resulting in two heart surgeries, including an open-heart procedure, and prolonged medication. The issue was resolved in 2014.

In a separate incident, a 150-pound cross fell on Caviezel, causing him to bite through his tongue and cheek, an injury visible in the film. He also dislocated his left shoulder.

The sequel, tentatively titled "The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection," is rumored to begin filming soon with a potential 2024 release. Caviezel confirmed discussions with Mel Gibson about the project, stating that Gibson is currently working on the script and is committed to making the film.

Gibson previously described the sequel's focus on the period between Jesus' death and resurrection, highlighting the complexity of the script and the challenge of portraying different realms and time periods.

Given the original film's box office success (over $600 million), Caviezel believes securing funding for the sequel won't be difficult. He expressed his affinity for films that convey truth and explained his commitment to openly discussing his faith, especially following accusations of antisemitism surrounding "The Passion of the Christ."
