Following a challenging personal week, Lucas Giolito's struggles extended to the baseball diamond Tuesday night. The Chicago White Sox pitcher, who recently announced his separation from his wife, Ariana Dubelko, had a difficult outing against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Giolito surrendered five runs in the first inning alone, starting with a walk to Brandon Nimmo, who subsequently scored on a Tommy Pham double. Pete Alonso's sacrifice fly further extended the Mets' lead. While Giolito managed to strike out Jeff McNeil, he then gave up consecutive home runs to rookies Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty, pushing the score to 5-0.
The Mets continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning with an RBI double from Francisco Lindor, followed by a solo home run from DJ Stewart in the fourth. Giolito's night ended prematurely after loading the bases in the fourth, having thrown 100 pitches in just 3.2 innings. His final line included eight earned runs, six hits, and five walks.
Giolito publicly shared the news of his and Dubelko's mutual decision to end their four-year marriage via an Instagram post during Monday's Home Run Derby. The post emphasized their commitment to maintaining a friendship and supporting each other moving forward.
According to reports, Dubelko officially filed for divorce in California, citing "irreconcilable differences." A representative for Giolito confirmed the mutual nature of the separation.
The difficult outing significantly impacted Giolito's ERA, which stood at 3.45 prior to Tuesday's game.
