Ted Lange, renowned for his portrayal of Isaac the bartender on "The Love Boat," recently revealed an intriguing chapter of his career journey. His iconic role inspired an unexpected venture: a sex advice column. During an appearance on Steve Kmetko's "Still Here Hollywood" podcast, Lange shared how his on-screen persona as a dispenser of wisdom and cocktails translated into a real-life advice-giving gig.
Titled "Ask Isaac," the column found its home in the now-defunct FHM magazine. Initially, Lange partnered with adult film star Jenna Jameson, but the collaboration was short-lived. Beth Ostrosky, then-girlfriend and now-wife of Howard Stern, subsequently took over as co-writer.
Lange emphasized his commitment to promoting safe sex practices and injecting humor into his advice. He recounted flying to New York for photoshoots featuring himself in a sailor's cap and Ostrosky in a nightie, reminiscent of Hugh Hefner's iconic style.
While the column's run was brief, Lange's career continued to flourish, encompassing directing and writing for both television and theater. He holds fond memories of his time on "The Love Boat," which aired from 1977 to 1986, sharing the screen with Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Fred Grandy, Lauren Tewes, and Jill Whelan. The show was also known for its rotating cast of celebrity guest stars, including the legendary Gene Kelly.
Lange shared an anecdote about Kelly, recalling how the cast was advised to avoid interacting with the notoriously private star. However, Lange defied the warning and engaged Kelly in a conversation about the Nicholas Brothers, a pair of Black tap dancers who had collaborated with Kelly. This unexpected question piqued Kelly's interest, leading to a friendly exchange and an invitation for drinks after work. Lange speculated that his unique question, diverging from the usual "Singin' in the Rain" inquiries, was the key to connecting with the iconic performer.
"My main goal was condoms and humor. If I can work those two things in the answer, then we're doing alright."
— Ted Lange
