Starting August 1st, Chris Hosey will helm the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), following his appointment by Governor Brian Kemp. The state Board of Public Safety confirmed Hosey's appointment on Saturday. He replaces Mike Register, who is leaving the position after less than a year to become Cobb County's public safety director.
The GBI, with its nearly 1,000 employees, assists local law enforcement in investigating serious crimes, including homicides. GBI agents are involved in investigating almost all police shootings, and the bureau also conducts autopsies and manages the state's crime lab.

Currently, Hosey serves as the GBI's assistant director, overseeing its largest unit, the investigative division.
Hosey's career with the bureau began in 1987 as a narcotics agent. In 2001, he was tasked with leading a drug task force, a role that led to the creation of the agency's first combined state and local drug enforcement office. By 2012, his responsibilities expanded to include drug operations, several general investigative offices, and the GBI's training unit. In 2020, former GBI Director Vic Reynolds promoted Hosey to deputy director of investigations.
