Despite kicking the game-winning field goal against the Los Angeles Chargers, Matthew Wright has been released by the Kansas City Chiefs following the return of Harrison Butker from injury reserve. Wright's four field goals and extra point in the 19-17 victory earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, but his time with the Chiefs proved short-lived.

Butker's return from a four-game absence due to knee surgery prompted Wright's release. During his two-game stint with Kansas City, Wright successfully converted 8 of 9 field goal attempts and both extra point tries. His final kick, a 31-yarder that bounced off the upright and in, secured the win over the Chargers. The dramatic kick capped a drive led by Patrick Mahomes that put the Chiefs in position to win after trailing 17-16.

At 28 years old, Wright has played for five different teams over his five-year NFL career, including three separate stints with the Chiefs. He also has experience with the Pittsburgh Steelers (twice), Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers. Interestingly, all three games Wright played this season – one for the 49ers and two for the Chiefs – resulted in victories for his team. With a career record of 51 of 59 on field goals and 40 of 42 on extra points, Wright now enters free agency seeking a new opportunity.

Butker is expected to make his return to action this Sunday when the Chiefs face the Cleveland Browns.
