Chiefs' Close Wins Raise Questions, But Brees Remains Confident

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs currently hold a 12-1 record, but their narrow victories have sparked debate about their true strength. Many of their wins have come down to the final moments, including walk-off field goals and a blocked field goal attempt that sealed a victory. Despite this less-than-dominant performance, former NFL quarterback Drew Brees believes the Chiefs are still the team to beat.

Brees recently stated in an interview with Fox News Digital, "They’re never pretenders. With Patrick Mahomes and a strong defense, they play a complementary style of football." He compared this year's Chiefs team to last year's, which entered the playoffs with a less-than-stellar record but ultimately won Super Bowl LVIII, becoming the first back-to-back champions in two decades.

Brees highlighted the Chiefs' tendency to appear average during the regular season while still managing to win. He believes this pattern of overcoming challenges and peaking in the playoffs is key to their success.

Recent games against the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders, won by a combined five points, exemplify the Chiefs' tightrope walk to victory. Even with a 3-1 record in their last four games, their point differential is a concerning minus-2. The road ahead presents further challenges, with a demanding three-game stretch in 11 days due to a Christmas game, and three of their final four games being played away from home.
