A dramatic landslide in Rolling Hills Estates, California, has led to the evacuation of sixteen residents and the destruction of twelve homes, with more properties still under threat. The incident began on Saturday afternoon when Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to a reported water leak on Peartree Lane. Upon arrival, they discovered significant structural damage and cracks in and around the affected homes, prompting immediate evacuations.
Residents were given a mere 20 minutes to gather their belongings and flee as the ground continued to shift. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn witnessed the rapid progression of the landslide firsthand, noting that the land moved approximately six feet in a short period. The affected homes have been deemed uninhabitable, with water, electricity, and gas services shut off in the area.
While excessive rainfall is suspected as a contributing factor, geologists are investigating the scene to determine the precise cause of the landslide. Hahn described the event as unprecedented in her experience, emphasizing the speed and severity of the land movement.
