Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt recently embraced a unique penalty for his 4-10 fantasy football record last season: serving as the team's bat boy. During Saturday's spring training game against the New York Yankees, Bassitt donned a jersey with "4-10" proudly displayed on the back, fulfilling his fantasy league punishment.
The lighthearted moment coincided with Bassitt's 36th birthday. It also served as a reminder of how seriously professional athletes take their fantasy sports, echoing a similar incident in 2022 between Joc Pederson and Tommy Pham, which escalated into a physical altercation.
Now entering his 11th MLB season and third with Toronto, Bassitt posted a 4.16 ERA across 31 starts in 2024, striking out 168 batters. In 2023, he finished 10th in American League Cy Young Award voting, leading the league in wins (16), starts (33), and batters faced (826), while also achieving a career-high 200 innings pitched.
Projected as the Blue Jays' No. 3 starter this season, behind Kevin Gausman and Jose Berrios, Bassitt joins a rotation that also features Max Scherzer and Bowden Francis. The Blue Jays finished the 2024 season with a 74-88 record.
