Penn State Dominates Maryland, Secures Big Ten Title Game Berth

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following Ohio State's unexpected loss to Michigan, the path to the Big Ten title game opened up for Penn State. The Nittany Lions seized the opportunity, defeating Maryland decisively with a 44-7 victory.

Despite a shaky start, including a fumble on their first play and allowing a subsequent touchdown, Penn State quickly regained control. They responded with 38 unanswered points, with 28 coming in a dominant second quarter. Running back Nicholas Singleton, who fumbled early, redeemed himself with a touchdown to give Penn State the lead. Capitalizing on Maryland's turnover on downs, Penn State quickly extended their lead with another touchdown. Maryland's struggles continued, and Penn State added two more touchdowns, one after a three-and-out and another following an interception, to build a commanding 24-7 lead by halftime.

Singleton added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to solidify Penn State's victory. After their initial score, Maryland's offense faltered, punting or turning the ball over on their next twelve possessions. They only managed to cross midfield twice during this stretch.

With this win, Penn State secured a spot in the Big Ten title game against Oregon in Indianapolis next week. This marks Penn State's first appearance in the championship game since 2016. The winner of the title game will earn a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. Even with a loss, the runner-up is likely to host a first-round playoff game.
