Johnny Kincaid's connection to Beckley's Historic Black Knight municipal park runs deep. For half a century, it's been more than a workplace; it's been his second home, a place he knows like the back of his hand. Starting at the young age of 18, Kincaid has dedicated his life to maintaining the park's grounds, serving as head groundskeeper.
To commemorate his remarkable 50-year tenure, the city unveiled a new street sign on Monday. "Johnny Kincaid Way" now marks the road leading to the maintenance shed, the very building housing the tools and vehicles Kincaid uses daily to keep the park pristine. This touching tribute ensures that every workday begins with a reminder of his unwavering commitment.

Retirement isn't on Kincaid's radar, despite his impressive years of service. A vacation perhaps, but stepping away from the park he so clearly cherishes isn't in his plans.
Kincaid's extensive knowledge of the park has proven invaluable, especially when the city acquired the property five years ago. Beckley Parks and Recreation Director Leslie Gray Baker emphasized Kincaid's crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition, highlighting his intimate familiarity with the golf course, its equipment, and even, it seems, every blade of grass on the 67-acre expanse.
Micah Davis, the director of golf at Black Knight, also praised Kincaid's dedication, noting its rarity in today's world. Beckley Mayor Rob Rappold echoed these sentiments, referring to Kincaid as an "institution" at the park.
Kincaid's legacy extends beyond his professional duties. He once resided on the golf course itself, in the groundskeeper's house near the maintenance shed. A towering blue spruce tree, planted by Kincaid decades ago, stands as a testament to his enduring presence. He jokingly claims ownership of the tree, despite the city's ownership of the land.
Kincaid's favorite spots on the course are holes 2 and 3, offering breathtaking views. Hole 3, located at the heart of the course, provides a sense of tranquility, while hole 2 overlooks the expansive vista of Raleigh.
