Former New York Yankees closing pitcher Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara, have refuted accusations of concealing child sex abuse. The allegations, brought to light in a lawsuit, claim the Riveras were aware of abuse occurring in their home and at a summer camp linked to their church, but chose to ignore it. The Riveras, through their attorney, assert these claims are entirely false and that they were first made aware of the accusations in 2022, four years after the alleged incident, when they received a request for a financial settlement.

The lawsuit, filed by a woman identified as "Jane Doe," alleges she was sexually abused by a minor, "MG," during a 2018 summer internship at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida, which was affiliated with the Riveras' church. The suit further claims the abuse continued at the Rivera residence in Rye, New York. The Riveras' legal team contends the lawsuit is riddled with inaccuracies and misrepresentations and are confident it will not hold up in court.

The lawsuit asserts that Doe's mother informed Clara Rivera of the abuse and that Clara promised to investigate, but instead, allegedly covered it up to protect the reputation of Refuge of Hope and the Ignite Life Summer Internship. The Riveras firmly deny these allegations, stating they do not condone child abuse of any kind. The couple received a second request for a financial settlement in 2023 from a different Florida law firm.

Mariano Rivera achieved baseball's highest honor in January 2019, becoming the first unanimous inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Later that year, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-President Donald Trump.
