White House Disputes Twitter's Fact-Check on Biden's Wage Claim

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refuted a Twitter Community Note challenging President Biden's assertion that American wages have risen since he took office. This sparked considerable online debate, with many users criticizing Jean-Pierre's dismissal of the fact-check.

During a press briefing, a reporter questioned Jean-Pierre about a tweet from President Biden, which was subsequently flagged by Twitter's Community Notes feature for containing inaccurate information regarding wage growth. The note provided statistics and charts demonstrating that real wages, adjusted for inflation, are currently lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Jean-Pierre firmly disagreed with the Community Note, citing data from February 2021 that purportedly showed wage increases. She attributed this positive trend to the success of "Bidenomics" in strengthening the economy.

However, her response triggered a wave of criticism on Twitter. Several users accused her of ignoring readily available data, while others questioned the administration's economic policies. Critics pointed to rising inflation and the decrease in real wages as evidence against the White House’s claims.

President Biden’s original tweet stated, "Right now, real wages for the average American worker [are] higher than it was before the pandemic, with lower wage workers seeing the largest gains. That's Bidenomics." The Community Note directly contradicted this statement, providing data showing that real wages, adjusted for inflation, were lower in July 2023 than in March 2020, at the start of the pandemic.

Throughout the press conference, Jean-Pierre maintained her defense of the administration's economic policies, reiterating her claims of wage growth and declining unemployment. She attributed these improvements to the president's initiatives and the positive impact of "Bidenomics."

Despite the criticism, Jean-Pierre continued to emphasize the administration's view of a thriving economy under Biden's leadership.
