A nationwide recall has been issued for specific breadcrumb products due to the presence of an undeclared sesame allergen. La Fiesta Food Products, LLC, based in La Miranda, California, initiated the recall, which affects their 8-ounce packages of both "Unseasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado)" and "Seasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado Sazonado)."
The company's announcement, released on January 25th and subsequently published by the FDA on January 28th, highlights the potential danger to individuals with sesame allergies. Consumption of these products by those with a sesame allergy or severe sensitivity could trigger a serious or even life-threatening allergic reaction. While no illnesses have been reported to date, the company urges consumers to exercise caution.

The unseasoned breadcrumbs were distributed from April 10, 2024, to January 22, 2025, while the seasoned variety was available from August 29, 2024, to January 22, 2025. The recall stems from a labeling error that failed to disclose the presence of sesame, an omission further complicated by the lack of Spanish language allergen information on the packaging.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled breadcrumbs are advised to return them to their point of purchase for a full refund. This incident underscores the importance of accurate food labeling, particularly regarding allergens. In 2023, the FDA officially recognized sesame as the ninth major food allergen in the U.S., joining milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans – which collectively account for 90% of food allergies. The FASTER Act of 2021 solidified sesame's designation as a major food allergen, requiring clear labeling on food products containing it.

This recall serves as a reminder for consumers with allergies to diligently check food labels and for manufacturers to prioritize accurate allergen information. Clear and comprehensive labeling is essential for protecting public health and preventing potentially dangerous allergic reactions.
