Former President Donald Trump expressed doubt that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will appoint his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to fill Senator Marco Rubio's soon-to-be-vacant seat. Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club, Trump stated, "No, I don’t. I probably don't. But I don’t know. Ron’s doing a good job. That’s his choice – nothing to do with me."

This comes after Trump's announcement last month that he intends to nominate Rubio for Secretary of State. Since then, there has been speculation and advocacy from Trump and his allies for Lara Trump to take over Rubio's Senate seat. Lara Trump recently concluded her tenure as Republican National Committee co-chair.

While acknowledging the speculation, the former president praised his daughter-in-law's capabilities and popularity, highlighting her successful stint at the RNC and the numerous opportunities she's receiving, including television offers and other contracts. "Lara's unbelievable. She was incredible. The job she did at the RNC…. she is so highly respected… People want her to be on television. They want to give her contracts. She's got so many other things that she's talking about."

Despite his praise for Lara Trump, the former president affirmed that the decision ultimately rests with DeSantis. "He leaves a vacancy in Florida and Ron's going to have to make that decision. And he'll make the right decision." He also commended Rubio's service.

Reports indicate that Trump has privately encouraged DeSantis to consider Lara Trump for the position. However, sources suggest DeSantis is leaning towards appointing someone with prior experience in Florida politics. Lara Trump herself has expressed interest in the Senate seat, stating she would "seriously consider" the opportunity.

DeSantis, who had a sometimes-strained relationship with Trump during the 2024 Republican presidential primary, has since mended fences and supported Trump's general election campaign. Last month, DeSantis outlined the qualities he seeks in Rubio's replacement, emphasizing alignment with Trump's agenda, strong stances on immigration and border security, fiscal responsibility, and conservative principles.

DeSantis has indicated he expects to make a decision by early January. The formal Senate confirmation process for Rubio will commence after Trump's inauguration on January 20th.
