A special SmarTrip card released by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to commemorate Donald Trump's inauguration has become a hot collector's item. The card, featuring Trump's image and the number 47, can be loaded with up to $300 for use on public transportation.
The card is being sold at select Metro stations while supplies last, with the Metro Center station already sold out. WMATA has a history of issuing commemorative inauguration cards, having done so since 1993 (with the exception of 2021 due to the pandemic). This year's card follows the 2017 version, which featured a generic inauguration card with a sleeve bearing Trump’s image.
The card's release has fueled a resale market, with prices on eBay ranging from $20 to a staggering $450. One seller highlighted the card's value as a piece of political memorabilia and a testament to Trump's presidency. Other Trump cards are listed with starting bids of $150 and $300, while Barack Obama Metro cards from his 2009 inauguration are fetching prices between $500 and $1,000.
With increased travel expected for the inauguration, travel advisor Kristin Petersen recommends considering accommodations outside the district near Metro stations, such as Vienna, Virginia, and checking the Metro schedule for any changes due to special events.
