Kerry Faces Criticism for Climate Change Remarks Amid Ukraine War

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, recently drew criticism following comments he made on MSNBC about the impact of the war in Ukraine on climate change. Speaking with host Jen Psaki, Kerry expressed concern over the conflict's environmental consequences, citing the release of greenhouse gasses like methane from damaged infrastructure.

His remarks sparked backlash on social media, particularly among conservatives who highlighted Kerry's own use of private jets. Critics questioned the focus on climate change amidst a major international conflict, with some like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's rapid response director, Christina Pushaw, sarcastically inquiring about Kerry's mode of transportation to England.

Presidential candidate Nikki Haley also weighed in, expressing disbelief at Kerry's focus on greenhouse gas emissions during the war. She stated that the Biden administration's end couldn't come soon enough.

Kerry's comments came while he was in England, where President Biden met with King Charles III. Among the topics discussed were the U.S. decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine, a move opposed by the U.K. due to potential harm to civilians. Biden defended the decision as a temporary measure until more conventional munitions could be produced.

Following his U.K. visit, President Biden traveled to Lithuania for a NATO summit.
