Trump Administration Initiates Peace Negotiations in Russia-Ukraine War

Created: JANUARY 13, 2025

Retired Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis suggests that peace is within reach as the Trump administration prepares to commence negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. These discussions are anticipated to begin in the coming days or weeks.

During a visit to NATO headquarters in Belgium, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth addressed concerns about the U.S. potentially undermining Ukraine by initiating peace talks with Russia without Kyiv's full participation. Hegseth dismissed these concerns, stating that the move toward negotiation reflects a global interest in achieving peace through diplomatic means.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has persisted since Russia's invasion in February 2022. Throughout his campaign, Trump consistently maintained that the war would not have occurred under his presidency in 2022 and pledged to resolve it if re-elected.

Trump recently disclosed a "lengthy" phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Putin agreed to commence negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine. Trump also engaged in separate discussions with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. Following these conversations, Trump indicated the possibility of a face-to-face meeting with Putin, potentially in Saudi Arabia.

Hegseth highlighted Trump's negotiation skills, emphasizing his capacity to bring opposing parties together to achieve a peaceful resolution. He expressed optimism about the upcoming ministerial meeting with NATO allies, anticipating open discussions about the current situation.

Hegseth expressed his belief in Trump's unique ability to facilitate peace talks, calling him the "one man in the world capable of convening the parties together to bring peace."

During his visit to NATO headquarters, Hegseth conveyed to allies that the goal of restoring Ukraine's pre-2014 borders is unrealistic. He emphasized Trump's commitment to resolving the conflict through diplomatic negotiations, with the support of the U.S. Department of Defense. Hegseth stressed the importance of recognizing the impracticality of returning to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders, as pursuing this objective would only prolong the conflict and exacerbate suffering. He underscored the desire for a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine while advocating for a pragmatic approach to peace negotiations.
