A devastating incident at Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle has claimed the life of a recent University of Illinois graduate and left her friend severely injured. The two young women, identified by family and community members as Eva Liu, 21, and Kelsey Chang, 22, were attacked while hiking near the iconic landmark on June 14th.
According to reports, the pair encountered a 30-year-old Michigan man who led them to a secluded viewpoint. There, he allegedly assaulted Liu. When Chang intervened, she was pushed down a 165-foot ravine. The attacker then reportedly assaulted Liu before also pushing her down the cliff. While Chang survived and has since been released from the hospital, Liu tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Both Liu and Chang had just graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in May, with degrees in computer science and computer engineering, respectively. The university community expressed its grief and shock over the senseless tragedy.
The suspect, whose name has not been officially released, was apprehended near the scene and is currently under investigation for murder, attempted murder, and a sexual offense. German authorities are expected to take several months before formally charging him.
This horrific event has cast a shadow over the renowned Neuschwanstein Castle, a popular tourist destination known for its fairytale architecture and stunning scenery. It serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected dangers that can lurk even in the most picturesque locations.
