Torkelson's Outburst at Umpire Highlights Tigers' Win Over Royals

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson experienced a frustrating night at the plate against the Kansas City Royals on Monday, culminating in a heated exchange with home plate umpire Will Little. Despite the Tigers securing a 6-4 victory, Torkelson's 0-for-4 performance, including two strikeouts, clearly left him agitated.

The pivotal moment occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Tigers trailing by one run. Facing Royals pitcher Taylor Clarke, Torkelson was called out on strikes on a changeup. While the broadcast's strike zone graphic indicated the 90 mph pitch clipped the lower right corner of the zone, Torkelson vehemently disagreed with the call, directing expletives towards Little. Despite the outburst, which was clearly audible on the broadcast, Torkelson was not ejected.

The 2020 first overall draft pick, Torkelson is currently batting .231 with a .700 OPS and eight home runs in 70 games this season. His eight homers equal his total from 110 games in 2022.

Fortunately for Detroit, Kerry Carpenter stepped up in the following at-bat, launching a three-run homer that propelled the Tigers to victory and extended the Royals' losing streak to 12 losses in 13 games.
