Stacey Abrams-Founded Group Faces Layoffs After Ethics Fine

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The New Georgia Project (NGP), a voter engagement organization established by Stacey Abrams, has reportedly conducted multiple rounds of layoffs following a substantial ethics fine for campaign finance violations. Dozens of employees have been let go since December, some with minimal notice, according to reports. The NGP attributes the job cuts to financial challenges, including reduced fundraising in a non-election year.

The organization, which focuses on registering and engaging minority voters, gained prominence for its role in helping Democrats win key elections in Georgia in 2020. However, it recently faced scrutiny and a record $300,000 fine from the Georgia Ethics Commission. The commission found that the NGP and its associated political action fund improperly supported Abrams' 2018 gubernatorial campaign and failed to disclose donations and expenses. The investigation revealed over $7 million in unreported funds connected to Abrams' campaign.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by an NGP policy director to support affected employees cites economic downturns and reduced fundraising as reasons for the layoffs. While Abrams has distanced herself from the NGP since launching her gubernatorial campaign in 2017, her association with the organization continues to draw criticism from political opponents. They question her awareness of the financial irregularities and her level of involvement in the NGP's operations.

Republican leaders in Georgia have seized upon the NGP's financial troubles and ethics violations to criticize Abrams, questioning her leadership and financial management. They also accuse her of misleading donors and skirting campaign finance regulations. While Abrams has expressed disappointment about the NGP's setbacks and voiced support for the laid-off employees, the controversy surrounding the organization continues to impact her political standing.

Despite the challenges, the NGP highlights its voter registration efforts, emphasizing its success in registering a significant number of Black and young voters in Georgia.
