Former New York City Mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani has been found in contempt of court by U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman. Judge Liman ruled that Giuliani deliberately disregarded a court order to provide information about his financial assets. This information is crucial to the defamation case involving two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss, whom Giuliani falsely accused of election fraud during the 2020 presidential election. Giuliani was ordered to pay them $148 million in damages.
The judge stated that Giuliani "willfully violated" a clear court order by missing the December 20th deadline to submit the required financial details. Instead of complying, Giuliani was accused of employing delaying tactics and withholding information about assets that could be used to satisfy the judgment. He testified for several hours over two days attempting to explain the delays.
Judge Liman plans to impose sanctions against Giuliani for the contempt of court finding, with the details of those sanctions to be determined at a later date. A separate trial is scheduled for January 16th to address whether certain assets, including a New York Yankees World Series ring and Giuliani's Florida residence, can be seized to contribute towards the payment owed to Freeman and Moss.
