Chicago Community Outraged Over Lack of Security Cameras After Child's Assault at Rainbow Beach

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A wave of anger and disbelief has swept through Chicago following the disturbing news of a 4-year-old child's molestation at Rainbow Beach. The incident, which occurred Tuesday evening around 5:30 p.m., has sparked outrage among residents and community leaders, particularly regarding the absence of security cameras in the public beach area.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic male between 35 and 45 years old, fled the scene after the assault. Community activists rallied on Sunday to disseminate sketches of the suspect, hoping to identify him quickly. The incident has brought to light concerns about safety and security, particularly on Chicago's South Side.

Community leaders have directed their frustration at Mayor Brandon Johnson, criticizing the lack of security cameras at Rainbow Beach and suggesting neglect of the South Side. Tio Hardiman, Executive Director of Violence Interrupters, issued a stark warning to parents, advising them against letting their children use public restrooms due to safety concerns. He described the situation as something "out of a horror movie."

Andre Smith, CEO of Chicago Against Violence, echoed these concerns, questioning the absence of cameras in a city known for its extensive surveillance systems. Smith emphasized the importance of protecting children and expressed disappointment that such a basic security measure was lacking. He also called for renovations to the bathrooms, describing them as being in worse condition than those in jails.

Adding another layer of concern, Smith pointed out a resemblance between the suspect's sketch and that of an individual involved in a separate assault on an 11-year-old girl in November. Hardiman urged anyone with information about the suspect to come forward and "do the right thing."

Hardiman issued a citywide plea to parents, urging vigilance and awareness for their children's safety, emphasizing that nothing can be taken for granted.

Fox News Digital contacted the Chicago Park District for a statement but has not yet received a response.
