Quarterback Gunner Stockton had just connected with wide receiver Arian Smith for an impressive 67-yard gain. However, the electrifying play was negated by Jones' unintentional interference. The redshirt sophomore, while enthusiastically cheering on his teammates from the sideline, inadvertently stepped onto the field and collided with an official. This resulted in a 15-yard penalty, pushing the Bulldogs back and erasing the significant gain.

Head Coach Kirby Smart, initially unaware of who caused the penalty, later addressed the situation, referring to it as an "undisciplined, self-imposed wound." He highlighted the safety concern of encroaching on the officials' designated area and emphasized the importance of avoiding such mistakes.

While the penalty undoubtedly impacted the game's momentum, it wasn't solely responsible for Georgia's loss. The Bulldogs struggled on third and fourth downs, going 2-of-12 and 0-of-3, respectively. Additionally, they gave up a costly 98-yard kickoff return to start the second half, ultimately contributing to their defeat against Notre Dame.
