Schlossberg Criticizes Trump's Declassification of JFK, RFK, and MLK Assassination Files as Political Stunt

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Former President John F. Kennedy's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, criticized President Donald Trump's recent executive order declassifying assassination-related files pertaining to JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. Schlossberg expressed his disapproval on X (formerly Twitter), arguing that Trump's action was a politically motivated move exploiting JFK's legacy.

"Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back," Schlossberg wrote. "There’s nothing heroic about it."

Following the signing of the order, Trump stated that "everything will be revealed." Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, praised the decision as a "great move" towards transparency and fulfilling a promise to the American public. Kennedy has long advocated for greater clarity surrounding the assassinations of his father and uncle.

MLK and JFK

Trump's order mandates a plan within 15 days for the complete release of JFK assassination records and a separate plan within 45 days for files related to RFK and MLK Jr.'s assassinations. The King family released a statement expressing their hope to review the files privately before public release.

Despite a previous commitment to release the JFK files during his first term, a significant portion of the material remains classified. Trump previously cited concerns from the CIA and FBI regarding potential threats of "significant gravity" as justification for withholding the documents. In a recent interview on "Hannity," Trump indicated that then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo advised against the release, although the specific reasons were not disclosed.
