Following President Trump's inauguration, Salem State University (SSU) has publicly affirmed its commitment to diversity and inclusion, particularly concerning issues challenged by the previous administration's executive orders. These include protections for undocumented students and recognition of gender identity.
Two days after Trump took office, SSU's Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, Christopher Macdonald-Dennis, emailed students about "Moving Forward Together" in light of the changing political landscape. He emphasized the university's dedication to inclusivity, regardless of external events. Macdonald-Dennis also indicated that SSU would collaborate with other state universities to monitor the impact of the Trump administration's executive orders.

In a separate email, SSU General Counsel Rita Colucci addressed student concerns regarding law enforcement and immigration policies. She reiterated the university's commitment to a safe environment and outlined procedures for students if approached by unfamiliar law enforcement on campus. Colucci clarified that university police do not enforce civil immigration laws and provided links to resources such as the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition and the National Immigration Law Center.

SSU spokesperson Corey Cronin confirmed the university's commitment to its mission and core values, stating that they would adhere to federal and state laws while awaiting further guidance from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The university also provided students with "Know Your Rights" guidelines regarding interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other immigration and gender-related resources.
Among the resources shared with students was an "LGBTQIAP+ Awareness & Authentic Allyship" PowerPoint presentation defining various sexual orientations and gender identities. The presentation included examples of LGBT flags and discussed challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, such as discrimination, violence, and heteronormativity. It also addressed the nuanced language used to describe systems of oppression affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Early in his presidency, Donald Trump implemented executive orders targeting federal diversity and transgender initiatives, including one that affirmed the government's recognition of only two sexes. This action contrasted sharply with SSU's affirmed support for the LGBTQ+ community.
