PBS Shuts Down DEI Office Following Trump's Executive Order

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

In response to President Trump's executive orders targeting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, PBS has closed its DEI office and parted ways with its diversity officers. The public broadcaster confirmed this decision in a statement to Fox News Digital, emphasizing their commitment to complying with the presidential directive while upholding their mission and values. PBS reassured viewers that they will continue to reflect the diversity of America and maintain an inclusive environment.

PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger informed colleagues of the closure via a memo, explaining that the decision was made after consulting with legal counsel regarding Trump's executive orders. Kerger expressed well wishes to the departing DEI staff, Cecilia Loving and Gina Leow.

Loving, appointed Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in 2021, was responsible for strengthening PBS's internal commitment to DEI, evaluating business practices, and collaborating with public television stations on DEI efforts. Leow, hired as Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion the same year, also departs.

Trump's executive orders, signed shortly after his return to office, prohibit DEI offices and programs within the government and federally funded public universities. This action has prompted reactions from various sectors, with some praising a renewed focus on merit-based practices.
